Developed as a replacement for the M3/M5 Stuart series of light tanks, the M24 (given the name 'Chaffee' in British service) paired high speed and excellent mobility with the proven and powerful 75mm gun used in M4 Shermans. The trade-off for this was its thin armour, but this was considered acceptable for the reconnaissance and scouting work it was expected to perform. Arriving to the European theatre in late 1944, the Chaffee proved to be an effective and capable light tank in both American and British service, although it never served in the same huge quantities as the Stuarts it replaced. Post-war, the M24 became a staple of the export market, being fielded by dozens of nations, with the last not being retired by Uruguay until 2018!
On the Bolt Action tabletop, the M24 Chaffee gives US and British commanders excellent mobile firepower on a budget - its Medium Anti-Tank Gun combined with the Fast and Recce special rules allow it to hit hard and stay out of trouble, but as a light tank it must be carefully employed, as virtually any heavy weapon can cause serious damage.
