Soviet Airborne Forces began using the ASU-85 airborne assault gun from 1959, replacing the older opened-topped ASU-57. Its primary role was as infantry support. It had only limited anti-tank capability compared to the heavier guns equipping the main battle tanks like the T-55 and T-62 of the time.
