After the end of the Vietnam War, the U.S. Army began to rebuild its forces around mechanised infantry formations. Designed to work in concert with armoured units, mechanised infantry formations were equipped with the latest weapons and mounted in the new M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle to allow them to keep up with the new M1 Abrams tank entering service at the same time.
