Originally named the Hornisse (German for Hornet, the Nashorn (Rhinoceros), was a tank destroyer developed in 1942 by equipping the deadly Pak 43 heavy anti-tank gun onto a turretless Panzer IV chassis. Though only lightly armoured and displaying a high profile, it could frontally penetrate any of the Allied tanks at long range and was rightly feared by Allied tank crew.
Although lightly armoured the Nashorn, was relatively cheap to make and that coupled with it’s great mobility ensured it would stay in production until the end of World War II. Debuting at the apocalyptic Battle of Kursk it performed well in the flat, open expanses of the Russian steppe.
