Also known as Schwerer Panzerspähwagen (Heavy armoured reconnaissance vehicle), this 8 wheeled armoured car was used from the very early stages of the war for reconnaissance and screening missions. It was used in most theatres.
Mounted with a 20mm KwK 30 L55 auto cannon and co-axial machine gun, this 8-wheel drive armoured car had increased off road mobility compared to it’s 6-wheeled predecessor. Handily for a reconnaissance vehicle the Sd.Kfz 231 had controls allowing it to be driven forwards or backwards with equal ease.
