The SdKfz 250/251 Expansion Series
The SdKfz 250/9 leichter Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm) was a standard reconnaissance variant. Introduced in March 1942, 30 units were ordered and sent to Russia to replace armoured cars in the reconnaissance role, armed with a 2 cm KwK 38 autocannon and a coaxial MG (MG34 or MG32) in a low, open-topped turret identical to that of the SdKfz 222 armoured car. When the SdKfz 250/1 Alte was replaced with the newer SdKfz 250/1 Neu, the SdKfz 250/9 received a Hängelafette 38 and FuG 12 radio upgrade. After successful operations, mass production started in May 1943.
SdKfz 251/23 Hängelafette 38 auf Mittlerer Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm) is a reconnaissance variant intended to replace the SdKfz 250/9 and fitted with the same turret mounting as the SdKfz 234/1 armoured car housing a QF 2 cm autocannon.
